Of all the early Black Friday deals I’ve seen so far, this is one of the best: For a limited time, Amazon is offering the Fire HD 8 tablet for just $45. Regular price: $90. And if you’re an Amazon Prime subscriber who’s holding a Prime Rewards Visa card, you’ll get 10% back when you pay with that card. Net cost: $40.50. Even without that extra discount, this is a full 50% off and the lowest price Amazon has ever offered. Just incredible, especially considering how far away we are from Black Friday. That said, keep reading to learn why I think there’s an even better choice.

The Fire HD 8 has a 1,280×800-pixel display (not sky-high resolution, but more than sufficient for 8-inch-tablet tasks), 32GB of expandable storage, front- and rear-facing cameras and a USB-C charging port.

This is a decidedly entertainment-minded device, one that’s great for games, books, movies and the like. But you can use it for things like e-mail, Facebook, Pinterest, TikTok and YouTube. It also supports hands-free Alexa voice commands.

The Fire HD 8 isn’t the fastest tablet on the planet, but it’s certainly fast enough for the aforementioned apps. As for the cameras, they’re just 2-megapixels apiece, — definitely not framed-photography-friendly. For Zoom calls and such, though? They’re fine.

I’ve long considered the Fire HD 8 one of the best tablet deals, period, and that was based on a much higher price than this.

However, the arguably bigger news here is the Fire HD 8 Plus for $55, by far the lowest price on record. It’s only $10 more than the non-Plus model, but offers several key advantages.

For starters, the Plus comes with 3GB of RAM instead of 2GB. That means it’ll run faster, especially with memory-intensive apps like games.

The Plus also supports wireless charging (via an optional dock), a rarity among tablets. Amazon promises fasting charging for this model as well.

I think those extras are well worth the extra $10, though take note that if you’re using your Prime Rewards Visa, you’ll get just 5% back, not 10%. Still an utterly amazing deal.
